A brief history of Mesotherapy

Pioneered by Dr. Michael Pistor in 1952, Mesotherapy was first recognized as a medical specialty in 1986 by the French Society of Medicine. Though Mesotherapy is practiced worldwide to treat more than 100 medical conditions, it wasn’t until 1999 that Dr. Lionel Bissoon introduced the specialty to the U.S.

Mesotherapy is unique because the medications used for specific conditions are injected into the skin, preventing any number of side effects associated with oral dosing. It can also treat conditions where medications cannot be taken orally or topically.

How does Mesotherapy work?

Medications are injected with a 4-mm or 6-mm needle, usually about an inch apart. (Dr. Pistor referred to Mesotherapy as placing “medicinal bullets” where they are needed.) Each Mesotherapy injection delivers 0.02 cc of medication per injection – approximately one drop.

Use of Mesotherapy in the U.S.

In the US, Mesotherapy is mainly used to achieve cosmetic benefits such as reducing or eliminating cellulite, losing weight, sculpting the body and rejuvenating the skin. Dr. Bissoon’s original goal for training as a Mesotherapist in Paris was to find a cure for cellulite.

Treatment of cellulite with Mesotherapy

Cellulite, which affects more than 90% of women, can be physically and emotionally disabling. Fortunately, Mesotherapy offers a cure. But,as Dr. Bisson illustrates in The Cellulite Cure, Mesotherapy is currently the ONLY cure.  Dr. Bissoon points to three specific causes of cellulite that must be addressed in order to effectively treat the condition.  They are:

  • Decreased circulation
  • Damaged connective tissue
  • Increased fat cell size

With Mesotherapy, medications that treat these problems are blended, and then injected into the affected areas.  Treatments are performed every two or three weeks, with the average patient requiring 10-15 treatment sessions to completely reduce or eliminate their cellulite.

Mesotherapy and weight loss

Mesotherapy is also effective for achieving weight loss and body sculpting. Before Mesotherapy is performed for weight loss, it’s recommended that a medical evaluation be performed to rule out medical reasons as the cause of abnormal weight gain. If there is a medical problem such as hypothyroidism, it can be treated in conjunction with Mesotherapy.

Injections for weight loss involve a variety of medications that can break down and shrink fat cells. Once a formula is selected, the medications are injected into the areas of unwanted fat (approximately one inch apart), with each site receiving about 0.02 - 0.03 cc of medication. (The injected medication will spread approximately one inch, covering the entire area.) Treatments are performed two weeks apart until patients achieve the desired results.

Mesotherapy can be combined with diet, exercise and other weight loss regimens, including diet medications such Adipex and HCG (considered a weight loss miracle) to enhance results.

Mesotherapy in Spot Reduction

Mesotherapy is perfect for treating localized pockets of fat, such as fat occuring under the eyes, or the fat that produces jowls, double chins, love handles, saddle bags and banana rolls (bulging fat beneath the buttocks).  It can also be used to treat the abnormal fat pockets caused by bad liposuction.

MesoLift

The MesoLift procedure is a beauty secret of French women, used to maintain their naturally beautiful skin on the face, hands and neck. It’s common for Parisian women to have a MesoLift procedure monthly or quarterly, depending on their age. Dr. Maurice Drae and Christian Chams, the most prominent cosmetic Mesotherapists in Paris, recommend that the average woman start having the procedure performed at ages 28-30 to maintain youthfulness.  However, for models and actresses, they recommend starting as early as 21.

The MesoLift procedure rejuvenates the skin by increasing its tone, hydration, nourishment, and enhancing elasticity, which can lift sagging skin. The number of sessions varies from person to person, but it’s usually performed once a week for four weeks, then monthly or quarterly, based on the patient’s needs.

MesoLift uses a combination of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that are selected based on the skin’s appearance. Once a customized formula is prepared, it is injected into the face, neck, hands or any other part of the body. Patients often describe their skin as radiant and glowing after the treatment. With loose skin in the neck (turkey neck), the results are immediately visible.

Mesotherapy safety and complications

As a medical specialty, Mesotherapy has an incredible safety record spanning more than 50 years. The most common (and temporary) complications are:

  • Black and blue marks (bruising)
  • Mild discomfort at the time of injection
  • Swelling
  • Soreness
  • Allergic reactions to certain medications
  • Skin infection (fewer than 50 cases ever reported)

After more than 50 years of Mesotherapy, NO long-term debilitating side effects have been reported.

Mesotherapy is safe and effective in the treatment of cellulite, weight loss, body sculpting and skin rejuvenation.  The results speak for themselves.
